I decided to develop this image as the man in the photo intrigued me the most. I couldn’t tell what he was looking at at first, staring up towards the tree, eventually realising he was watching a squirrel. But I began to think, what if he was actually looking beyond the tree? So I tried to create a shift in perspective and a comedic angle, revealing the fact he’s looking up at an alien invasion instead.

I chose to work with images that I felt had distinct shapes I could use. The vertical, sharp lines of the monument and path sculpture, and the offset curve of the wheel especially.
My edited image attempts to obscre the forms of the original shapes and create something that draws your eye to the center. The darker corners and light center creates a feeling of leaning backwards or falling, with the central shape drawing the eye upwards. There is no real grounding point or clear focus, giving it a dreamy feeling. I feel like the final result has the appeal of the kind of image you may find generated by a neural network — a vague combination of city shapes that feels familiar yet wrong.
